There is something quite ironic about this thing called Change Management. At Untypical, we have been working in this space since the mid-1990s and in reality, for most change practitioners, nothing has changed.
Tried and true (or is that tired and true?) methodologies that deliver change programs in pretty much the same way as they did back in the early days.
People who create artefacts like change plans, BIAs (that's a business impact assessment for those not "in the know") and comms plans, the delivery of which are often used as the milestones of success more than the actual delivery of agreed outcomes.
We don't think that approach works anymore.
Yes, it keeps the executives and risk managers happy because they can point to the documents as evidence that we have covered off all the key steps but ... are we wanting to deliver effective and successful change outcomes OR are we happy just knowing that the documentation has been completed to everyone's satisfaction?
It might sound like we are being disruptive for the sake of being disruptive and maybe that is true. But, we offer this alternative and somewhat radical view of Change (and its more sophisticated sibling, Transformation) to challenge conventional thinking, to make people feel uncomfortable, to test and then push the boundaries.
Does everything we say here work for all organisations and in all circumstances? Absolutely not. Can you take everything you'll find on this web site and implement it in every change management scenario? Not even we would do that!
What we do know is that traditional, boring, risk-free Change Management (deliberate use of upper case) is nowhere near as effective as it should be to deliver real innovation and real transformation.
We really think it is time to change change.
